SLAM!

Alright, my dad and I have been hunting a vibration in his car for a couple years now. We've redone the transmission, new clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, etc. So now we're looking at the motor. If you have one or know where one is for a decent price, email me at hunterbee68@aim.com.
tired of him having to trailer his car while i drive mine. cause i know if all the work he put into my car was done to his, he wouldn't have this issue.
thanks

Devin,
A new motor won't fix his vibration problem if the flywheel and clutch are off balance. One of the users here just had his new flywheel and new pressure plate balanced for $80 at AMT. He had to pull them off and take them up there due to a driveline vibration. They were both out of balance. Now, no vibration.

A complete balance job usually costs $250 and up for the whole engine. You would have to pull all of the pistons and rods, crank, balancer, flywheel and clutch and take them to AMT to have them balace everything together. I know that Doug there, knows what he is doing. If you had your engine balanced when it was built, then just take the flywheel and pressure plate to them.

Getting another engine just opens up another can of worms, unless you see the receipts and trust the shop that did the work. Something as simple as milling the heads could cause a huge headache!

That's the thing, my dad can't remember what he had done to his motor (early 80's). my dad has always wanted a correct year block for his car and this is a good excuse. i asked this on another website (asked about the vibration) and they told me the same thing. but a couple local shops said they don't balance them... where is amt at?
here is the vibration issue: clutch pushed in or clutch pushed out, there is a vibration at mid to higher rpms. this happens when the car is sitting still or when the is being driven. at one point we took out everything but the flywheel and bellhousing, started it up and it wasn't there. me tellin my dad to balance the flywheel, pressure plate and that, but he came back saying everyone was tellin him they couldnt do that. so the trans and all that came in and out probably 10 times this past year, not fun. it has new clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, bellhousing, trans bearings, and flywheel. still not fixed. he was thinkin maybe the crank was screwed up and was throwing things off. i dunno. thanks for the response though. and a number and location for that place would be great.
thanks

They are on S. Florissant, in Ferguson, MO, closer to Hwy 70.
If you are sure that the vibration was gone when the pressure plate was off, then just take them the pressure plate. I would take them the flywheel too but if you have 6-pack rods the flywheel will have a 30.1 gram counter-balance that you don't want to remove! The only time you would use a neutrally balanced flywheel with an early 440 with 6-pack rods is if he had the engine balanced (without the flywheel) in the 80s. Is he running 6-pack rods?

Tell them Rob sent you!

Gave my dad the number for that place. It doesn't have 6 pack rods and unfortunately he didn't balance it years back when he redid it.

It should be internally balanced then unless he has the wide balancer in front. Then he would have 6-pack rods. A 1" balancer should tell you that it has standard rods.

Have him take the flywheel AND pressure plate to Doug at AMT.

What year engine did he use in the car? If it is an external balance engine using the 68 or wrong flywheel will give you a vibration the same as matching a internal balance engine with external balance flywheel.
